Hey Guys,

I was checking out one of the local nurseries here in Gladstone today and noticed they had some very nice, very healthy Liquidamber trees. Nearly bought one but decided to check and see if anyone has had any luck growing them as Bonsai here in Central QLD. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not quite central qld but here in Brisbane I have liquid amber growing quite well but it does need shade from our harsh qld sun during the warmer months as the leaves tend to burn around the edges

They looked really healthy in the nursery so I may just go back and give it a try. Might have to find somewhere with a bit of shade for it you reckon or is yours in full sun all the time?

I have mine in a position where it gets morning sun until about 10:30 am then it spends the rest of the day shaded by a big gum tree. The only issue you may have is it won't shed all it's leaves without some cold nights mine doesn't here it will lose a lot but not all but I just pinch off what it doesn't drop.

I have grown them here in WA where it gets hot and dry, they are water loving so if you keep the water up there should be no problems. I do not grow maple because of the leaf burn, never had that problem Liquidambars.

Always had full leaf drop and got beautiful autumn colours leaf reduction was also good. The reason I say did, mine was a large tree.
Getting to old for large trees so I sold it.

thats good to know that they will still thrive in the hotter whether... I've always liked the idea of having maples but not where I am. Some of the Liquidambar Bonsais that I have seen have been equally as nice though...
I am excited now.
