help with new bougie

Hi everyone
Got my first bougie for bonsai about a month ago, covered in bracts but not a single leaf. Should've taken a pic before today but here it is with about a third of the flowers gone... and some leaves breaking out.

Being my first bougie, and still a newbie, I was just after some guidance on maintenance...
I've read that the bracts should be removed after you've enjoyed the show? When should I do this and can I repot the plant into a colander for growing on?
I was contemplating layering the top off and growing a new leader as there isn't much in the way of taper, when would be the best time for this?
And finally, I haven't had a look at the roots yet but the way its flowering, I'm going to say it will be quite rootbound. What methods would be best to grow new nebari if needed, would the toothpick method work or ground layering be better?

This will be planted out in a colander in the ground but I thought I might like the idea of a cascade or semi, once the layer is removed? Any ideas or help would be great. Thanks
