Hi Mo,

I cannot comment on the styling... But your writing is enjoyable

The first step, of course, was to sit with a cup of tea and just stare at the tree from all angles.

Mid-summer, when the Jinn and Shari have completely dried, a 50% dilute of Lime Sulfur will be applied (assuming the tree isn’t sold by then – contact enquiries@miyabibonsai.com for sales info) to finish the deadwood.


-- Mr. Pup has mentioned years go that we should leave the exposed wood for a little while for it to age naturally first before apply Lime Sulfur.

So I think you have made the right decision in this regard.

I understand that this is not the right time to repot. But have you given any thoughts to the final pot yet? Given the quality of the tree, the current pot is very dis-satisfied IMO.

Jack Daniels? Might have a "beer goggles" effect and make a very ugly tree look beautiful. Then you'd wake up the next day with the tree next to you in bed and it's soil all over your sheets. Gives a whole new perspective on bare-rooting no?

In all seriousness, I would have loved to put this tree in a better pot straight away, but I faced two enemies in this quest! No. 1 is as you mentioned, the timing is possibly getting a little late. If I had not done the work I did, I would have repotted instead. No. 2 is, it is not mine but rather a customers tree, so until he decides it needs a new pot I'm pretty much pot bound (pun intended).

I can't help but think that the trunk line defeats the style?
IMO the trunk should go with the branches rather than against.
This way I'm sure that the style will be more convincing.

It depends on the style that is being achieved. A true windswept tree indeed would have everything going in the one direction, however this particular tree had no hope of that occurring. I guess this is more a tree which has had it's branches and trunk on the right hand scarred by harsh weather whilst the left side flourishes. It's not a true windswept but hey let's bend the rules a bit? (⌒▽⌒)
