Never tried an air layer before but been looking at my mothers port wine magnolia for a little while & decided to try one on it.
The tree is a dozen or so years old and I have taken a number of cuttings from it previously that have been fairly successful despite most being done at the wrong time of the year.

Now to wait & see the result. One thing I did forget was rooting hormone, only remembering when I was finished.....
Oh well, mums neighbour has a deciduous magnolia that I might have another go on soon.
Cheers

I have heard and read (I think it was Shibui) that rooting hormone can be mixed into a spray and actually applied to the leaves of the tree?
I've also heard that rooting hormone is not the be and and end all with many believing it to have no material impact on results.
Good luck!

Just took a look around for info about hormone spraying & apparently it can work, but I don't think I'll bother for now, see how it goes.

The initial air layer on this failed to take so late November or early December I totally re-did it. I then promptly forgot about it so its been sitting there unattended all summer. Decided to take a look yesterday & was surprised to find some very nice root growth.
Will be separating it this weekend, weather permitting, will update as pics etc as I go.
Cheers

Well, roots are looking healthy. Potted it up & will see how it goes over the next 12 months.
