was given two neglected significant red gums with plenty of character by a bloke who is down sizing his collection---scary cos I tend to kill natives---- very leggy at the moment and was wondering best time for repot and how hard to prune---how they back bud --- fertilizer feeding regime etc. any help appreciated

Pot in summer, should back bud, I fertilise like everything else but not to heavy handed with natives

Try the search button (top right) Guy. Fly posted quite a bit about the redgums he was working with on the northern ouskirts of Melbourne.
I know they bud back well from the few I have pruned but not sure whether success is related to the season. I have transplanted a few successfully but have had one die recently after transplant (not sure why).
Feed them well and they are remarkably fast growing. Eucs are NOT sensitive to P so you can use any fertiliser.

General consensus seems to be: repot warm months, Nov. onwards, no later than Feb. If you are going to bare-root, or be brutal, December might be safer. Water repeatedly through the day ("flooding"). Rub off the buds you don't want fairly soon, otherwise dominance issues can cause you to lose the shoots you need. Best of luck.
