Soltan asked me if I could post a picture of the Akadama. That is available here in Western Australia. It is the hard quality one that is used by the professionals in Japan.
The people who import it have said they are willing to ship to the Eastern States however as always freight is the Bug.To make it viable to both parties they need to ship by the pallet load. So it is suggested that a co op between Clubs nurseries and individuals might be the way to go.
Here are some pics

How many bags on a pallet Pup and what would the costs be per bag + shipping?
Maybe we could get a syndicate together and bring one to the east coast

Who's interested?

Asus I have not been ignoring you on this. I have just spoken to Arthur. He is back on deck the bags weigh approx 10 kgs. I have passed on the info needed to get bulk supplies now all that is needed is a commitment from people to how many. A pallet is 100 bags. So as Steven asked who is interested. As I said my trees are very happy with the change. Regards pup. Hopefully we will also have a Satsuki,( I do not like the word personally ) but expert. On board.

Arthur Robinson - also a violin maker - is definitely the person to speak to. If you do a google search for Arthur Robinson Violins Australia you should come up with his contact.
Arthur did an excellent demonstration at the Opening of the Australian National Bonsai and Penjing Collection back in October. He used Akadama and Kanuma (?) in the new planting.
If you are looking for small quantities, Arthur will be able to point you in the right direction. I know that for people in Melbourne; the Bonsai Farm at Hawthorn has purchased Akadama in a variety of sizes.

As to violin makers in Hobart ... sorry I know none ... that I am aware of.
I do understand that there are some extremely beautiful Bonsai in Tasmania. The cooler climate no doubt a positive factor in this!

Leong Kwong at Bonsai South in Caringbah in Sydney's southern suburbs carries akadama. He has a website
http://www.bonsaisouth.com.au and you could get more info from him.
