Hi all,

Am in emergency help for my blossom tree, leaves we're starting to dry up earlier last week , I thought maybe it was the very dry weather here in sydney, I placed some gravel ontop of the surface to help water retention, but even with the wet weather last couple days it's still dry. And also leaves are starting to go brown like they are burnt.

Does anyone know what this is and how I can help revive this...

Gets watered once a day each morning and once a week with seasol normally.

Might be cooked?

Chance its still ok though.
I'd put it in a shady spot out of the wind and ensure its moist.
A tray underneath with a sprinkle of rocks can help.
If it's still green underneath when you take a nick out of the bark it might be ok.

It's been in the shade for last 2 days, and it's been overcased and raining last 2 days. But the browning of the leaves is a little worrying... This shouldn't be because if the heat thou ?
Could it be some disease ??

Looks like a fairly deep pot, with water every day could be overwatered/root rot???

What is the history - is it collected, has it been repotted recently etc etc. When you say blossom tree do you mean a cherry blossom ?

What is it potted in?

Looks just like river gravel on the top of the pot. is that all that is in the pot?

Tree was purchased 6 weeks ago. I purchased 2 of them from a bonsai nursery. 1 larger tree and this smaller one.

The large tree is doing fine as with hall my other trees.

This small tree orignally was in a small pot, about 8cm in diameter.

its watered every morning and watered with seasol once a week.

Leaves drying up last week - i thought it was because the pot was soo small that it dried up quickly as there was only a small pot.

So i put it in a larger pot a week ago with more soil base so that it shouldnt dry as quickly, added the some bonsai gravel to help keep heat out....this was a week ago and it still not getting better.

its potted in standard bonsai mix from the nursery.

Owner of the nursery said it was a blossom tree. But iv never owned a cherry tree before to even know what a young tree looks like.
Does it not look familiar to a cherry blossom?

As far as I know there is no such thing as a blossom tree - the leaves are that shrivelled it's a bit hard to tell if it's a cherry If it is a cherry which is deciduous how much did you disturb the roots or did you slip pot it ? With the heat and wind you have had it would have been no surprise if it had dried out a bit. I would not have repotted a sick tree - I usually resort to daily seasol if I don't know what the problem is.

Did you add any fertilizer? Looks remarkably like fertilizer burn to me. But if you didn't add any then it can't be...

I'm in Sydney too, and my flowering pears (commonly called 'cherry blossoms') have been fine even in direct mid-day sun. If not fert burn, like the others, i suspect root rot. You'll know this by looking at the roots - if the soil is sludgey with a rotting smell then you're in trouble. Or could be underwatering as Bougy suggests. On second look, the leaves do look more like they're suffering from dryness than wetness... But hard to tell.

The leaves look a lot like a cherry tree, I would snip off the damaged leaves and snip the other leaves in half, to lesson the stress on tree,and keep in semi shade

I have added any fertiliser though so its weird....

the tree has been in a shadded areae last few days now.... and they are completely brown now all of on the leaves....but they do not have the hard texture like they are dry like at the beginning of the week. They are soft like normal leaves, but just brown....

ill need to upload a foto later today...

i might remove the leaves and just seasol it each day and see how it goes...

Given all this I suspect dehydration is the cause. The tree has scrapped those leaves in an attempt to save itself. They will not recover but hopefully the core is still alive and new leaves will grow now you have fixed the problem (larger pot, more water). It will take a few weeks for new shoots
If it does not recover (cherry can be quite unpredictable and difficult) just put it down to experience and try again.

a similar thing happened to some of my quinces and Japanese maples.

i think it was wind burn. we had quite a few hot windy days.

these trees are meant for this kind fo weather

place it in the sahde and hope it recovers

Just an update for the Cherry Blossom.


Looks like the tree is on the mend....new shoots are developing so the signs look good....

I removed all the leaves since last time.... and placed it in a shady area and making sure soil is always moist.

Also watered with Seasol every couple of days also...
