Portulacaria afra progression

Post by mugen »

I have been working on this mini jade for approx four years.
Dug it up as a mature shrub urban yamadori style. hacked it back to find the makings of a nice tree.

 :hooray:

This is awesome. I just got one of these, but it will be a long time before it looks this nice, and it will probably never be that big! Very nicely done.

Portulacaria afra have to be one of the easiest plants to bonsai.
I have found once you establish them in a pot treat them as a tropical lots of water heavy feed and put them in a humid place greenhouse if you have one.
I think most people treat them as a Cactus/succulent which they don't mind and survive that treatment but will never flourish and put on good growth.

Update in need of a haircut again. Looking for a new pot for this one anyone got any ideas? Was thinking of an oval blue glazed pot.

Thanks ken.
I have yet to find a pot for the upright tree. Thinking of joining a pottery class and try to create some thing close to what I envisage.

Great movement, that should make for a very nice tree in short order. Please keep us updated as you work with it. :tu:

Thanks lackhand :D
I'm going to pop it into a green house to accelerate its growth in the humid conditions. Hopefully will be able to show some progression by the end of summer :fc:

Can I defoliate a mini jade to force smaller leaf growth?

JRC I think if you prune hard and keep pinching the leaves will reduce quite well - you won't need to defoliate.
