I got given a couple of these trees when I bought a few neglected trees from a nursery a while ago. They thought they would make good bonsai so gave me 2 of them. Can anyone tell what they are. They a maple kind of leaf but not one I can find. This one has great colour but the other one is green only. The had straight trunks with some roots coming from high up the trunk so I decided to layer this one and it has roots growing strong.
The leaves are fairly large so it will probably need to be a larger bonsai if it makes it that far.

At first I thought Norway Maple but it looks like alternate buds which makes it some kind of Platanus? But a red leaved Plane tree is a first for me ??

Looks like we are a bit stumped here. The leaves don't really match either of the trees you mention treeman. The leaves are a very distinct shape.

Josh.

Hi Josh,

They are definitely a Platanus species or hybrid. The juvenile foliage of Platanus occidentalis looks exactly like this, but I am not familiar enough with other species to give you a definite ID. Did they have a large Platanus near the nursery? Often small scale nurseries will pot up seedlings from the car park etc. and sell them.

:tu: Cheers, didn't notice any trees near by but wasn't really looking either. I'm loving the colour in them right now.
