Hi does anyone know where I can get Japanese Cedar as a bonsai starter ie as tube stock or a bit bigger? I live in the Melbourne area. I am not averse to procurring plants online within Australia or even try germinating from seed if thats my only alternative. But where to get is my big problem.

talk to Mojo or CraigW60 they may be your best bet around melbourne. Watch for spider mite on these. I heard the little buggers love em

i have cryptomeria japonica in 3 inch starter pot @ $4.50. they are slightly smaller than the size of my fist. you can pm me if you are interested. i also have some in 8 inch squat pot. like matthew said, they are not the easiest to look after here in Melbourne, but still worth a try.

How are they doing?

I was going to suggest Tien at Bonsai Sensation..Trev also had some at Dingley which is where I got mine from last year.. Not sure about spider mite... had not had a problem with this in Melbourne...not yet anyway. I do however find this little tree a challenging subject. Mainly for it's crazy upright growth. I had the thing wired fully with branches all in the right place for a full year... Having just removed all the wire to give the tree a rest and grow some - the branches just sprung back up..it seems it takes awhile for branches to set into posi..(much like a spruce) Beaut little thing though as the trunk gets gnarly at a young age it seems....I'll stick up a photo when I get a chance..

That sounds awesome! I'd definitely love to see a photo. I'm very interested in getting one

Unfortunately I must report that all three died. I think it was a fungal root problem. I treated them but maybe too late. I would have purchased the plants late 2012 or early 2013. I remember I wanted to grow one of them over a rock but was warned not to touch the roots until after summer (or was it after winter?) Anyway maybe they are difficult to look after in Melbourne.
I do want to try again. There is a pine nursery (I hope its still there) around Mt Dandenong area that sells Japanese cedar in a 20cm or so pot. (About 30cm high) Probably for ~$30 plus. This may be a better option for me. At least the plants I bought were only ~$5 each.

Have bought the red cedar and it's doing really well ( fingers crossed ) bout 2-3 yes now .am in Melbourne bayside north facing garden . Was very dense so had to open it up to get air movement
The branches do somewhat grow up and needing wire for some time
Nice bright green foliage in spring summer and a darker green tipped blue or bronze in winter
When I did the initial prune / cut back I tried to take the cuttings and start new trees
To success had majority take roots except 1 or 2 I think too small
Haven't seen spider mite yet ?
Will post pics very soon
