Podocarpus from Bunnings

I was given this as a present from my baby brother who barely knows anything about bonsais. He saw my interest in bonsais and got me this one. $45 :palm: . Nonetheless i decided to work with it. He thinks i've ruined it by chopping of whatever little amount of leaves there were.

It's originally from Bonsai environment and is labelled 2009 ! Looking at the plant, does anyone reckon it's 4 years old. :o

It's been hand labelled as podocarpus.

Any advice on this one is more than welcome.

What a nice present from your brother :) Unfortunately my GF isn't getting my hints about my desire for wrapped bonsai at chrissy :P

Can't give you too much advice myself, but it looks like your wiring might need a little bit of work :) I found this thread really helpful with my wiring, I started myself by practising on a dead branch from the backyard :tu2:

In terms of age it probably is a 4yr old from cutting in 2009.
Can't help you with an ID and I'm not going to comment on wiring as mine is amateur at best

Although it is a little hard to tell without seeing new buds or flowers, I'm fairly sure your 'podocarpus' is a callistemon, an Australian native. First thing to do would be to get that steel wire off. Stick to aluminium wire for this little guy. Also, the top of the tree appears to be somewhat snapped off. Perhaps make a nice clean cut and then seal with wound sealant.

If it is a Callistemon, i will be very happy. Googled a few images and i like what i see. :tu:

Steel wire has come of..these things are nasty. Don't know why i used it. Will leave it for sometime before i rewire. Top has been cut of. See image. I just photoshopped where i made the cut.

Any other comments.

Wiring needs work :-)
Single piece of wire to do 2 branches, and round the trunk to anchor them both :-)

The wiki page has some great info but I am looking for some more images to show how the techniqes are used. Does anyone have any good links on Ausbonsai I can use?
