Working a small Fig

Hi everyone,
I have had this tree for getting on for 20 years. The last couple of years I have done some work on it to get some ramification going. I defoliated it today and also did some cutting and wiring.

Hi Ray,
Really nice little tree and pot combo... I particularly like the arrangement of the bottom branches but have you considered bringing down those in the upper 3rd in anticipation of the strong upward growth?
Also, whats your plan for the aerial roots? At the moment I think they detract and make the tree look young
but over time this will be reversed I think.
Looking forward to seeing it leaf out. Thanks for posting mate.

Yes, it makes so much difference when you completely defoliate. It gives the opportunity to see all the branch structure. When I looked at the photo I could see the need to bring the top down.

I think I will remove the aerials.

Thanks for the comments. I have done a lot more work on the tree. As soon as I can grab some time I will take a couple of photos to show what it looks like at present. Still a long way to go, but that's bonsai.

Hi angle10,
This is a current photo. I've been working on getting the bottom branches down. When the weather warms up a bit more I will do some work on the top to balance the branch sizes and do some thinning if necessary.

Where do you keep your fig? It seems to be growing nicely! mine are outside undercover but in this cooler weather they just dont grow that well. Im in melbourne, considering trying to bring them indoors, but it just makes it very messy trying to water them all the time indoors.

Hi Brad,
It's a Port Jackson. I bought it off Ray Nesci as a starter. It would be 15-18 years old. I have always kept it in the small pot. It grows very vigorously, during the warmer months I have to be at the leaves all the time to keep them small.

Hi Scooter,
All my figs are kept outside. After defoliating this one I put it in a position where it only get morning sun. I'll move it into a position where it will get sun for longer period, after there are more leaves. Have you checked with others in the Melbourne area to see if theirs are slow as well? What would your night temperatures be at present?

well we are obviously just coming out of winter, so untill recently its been sub 10 degrees. Its warming up but still with a few chilly nights, last night was a cold one.
I defoliated mine a while ago, and its just never recovered. Barely got any new leaves. Cant seem to win with them.

Those nights are still fairly cool. Keep at it mate, as the weather warms up I'm sure they will bounce back. Are you giving them any fertilizer?

Yeah now seasol every two weeks. Bought some saucers today gonna give them a b 've sunny window position I think
