Where to chop?

Hi All,

I've got this big Elm stump and I'm looking to reduce it.

I was thinking of chopping where I've marked the yellow line. Am I in the ball-park? Too high? Too low? Wrong cut angle?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

cheers
Tom

Here's a good, quick read that should help.

In a nutshell, don't cut on an angle like that unless you are cutting above a specific branch that will be your new leader. If you don't have a specific branch, then chop straight across and see how the tree responds, then cut again later when you have your new leader.

If it were me, I would move your line up and cut above the branch on the right on the current front, and use that as your leader. I'm sure you will get other advice too, let us know what you decide.

If you chop that low, you will miss out on the second section ( right hand slope) of your tree. it is smaller diameter than the lowest so taper is in that ben there which is good.

Like Karl. it would flat cut just above that next branch on the right, and hope to get a shoot on the other side which would become the next section. The one Karl mentioned is on the same side as the tree is moving so for me will be on the wrong side unless you want a slanting tree :-)

Once you decide the ne leader, then slant cut back to it to taper off the top of the second section of the tree.

'Throwing the cat amongst the pigeons' - I would almost attempt an Airlayer, turning 1 tree into 2.
The top, to me, looks suitable to a Broom style while you could still do the bottom half as above...

Sorry but it seem like a but I a waste to just cut off the top...
