I have had this guy for a while as a Black pine but it has become obvious that it is a Mugo and it has spent most of its life in wire (see Scars) and i never get time to work on them. The time for hard work is July/August and that is when i am repotting. I have bitten the bullet and worked this guy HARD by cutting of major branches and secondary's needle plucked and cut. Wired it within an inch of its life and did some Major bending and cambium splitting. A test crash dummy so to speak, lets see what it will do.

Here's wishing it pulls through-I wish I had stock like that to "experiment" on!

The tree looks to be in good health mate. Look forward to see how it responds. It should get some nice shape when it fills out.

Definately the start of a (*another) nice tree Bodhi, hoping it pull through for you

Why is the top still on the beer if you have finished work?
Would you consider "grafting" the errant root onto the nabari?
I will be interested to see how this looks in 12 months as it may be the way to go with this species. Would you mind keeping us up-dated on the progress please?

I love experiments, thats how we learn. I have lots of stock to play with (being a Nursery and all) and this is how my experience grows.

The tree being healthy was a requirement but i also had not touched it for a while so it was a prime candidate for the work done.

It was consumed straight after the pic was taken Watto. Didnt want people knowing i like a drink, Damn, i guess they do now.

Actually, when i saw the photo it looks like the tree is cuddling the beer." A new species invented have i ".. Beer pine.

Second photo is makin me thirsty

I'm very keen to see how this pine survives the treatment.

So what have i learnt, You cant work Mugo's hard in Late Feb. The tree is dead. I am now working another Mugo LIGHTLY.

Thanks for updating us as to the results. Could I please ask what your care regime was for the tree. I ask this question to add to the learning process for myself and hopefully for others who have been following this thread. Please let us know how the next one goes.

The tree was housed in my glass house for two weeks being misted morning and night and then moved out into a Zen garden in the Nursery, lightly fertilised and the misting was stopped and back to a normal watering regime of once a day. At this stage it was still green and surviving, i guess on stored energy. After two months or so i noticed browning on the ends of foliage and that was the beginning of the end. In hindsight i should have kept it in my glass house throughout Winter.
