New wire holder

Hey all,
Thought I'd share the new wire holder I just picked up from Ebay. Have been looking for something that I can repurpose to store my wire, but still be able to use it easily. After a fair bit of looking around, this is what I found:
So its bascially just a storage container for fishing line, but it has little holes in the bottom of each section that you can feed the line (or in my case wire) through.
Think it'll work a treat

Will only be able to hold 5 sizes, but that should hopefully be ok.
Just thought I'd share, as I thought it was a nifty idea

I look forward to hearing what is the max thickness of wire that will fit through the holes and if its possible to make the holes bigger without too much worry.
Also, will you have to respool all your wire onto the new spools so it fits?
Post a link if you get a chance also. Thanks.

No problems! They're called "Plano Spool Storage" and you can get them from a few different fishing stores. So just have a google, as you might find one locally and save a few bucks
Otherwise this is the link
HERE
They come in a few different sizes, but this was the largest

I intend on making a proper one though... but I know what I'm like, so thought I'd buy this for the meantime

haha

Yeah, that is going to be the question of the day, as it didn't specify the size of the hole that it feeds through. But I think they have little rubber bits on the end to allow for larger sizes to fit though
And yeah, going to have to put it all on to spools, which I'm going to need to make myself as well... as I can't seem to find the right sized spool anywhere. So will just go with two CD's and a piece of PVC and make it myself
It isn't huge, but am hoping it'll do the job for a while

I made a fast and ugly one from few pieces of left over pipe from the pond, that already had holes...but it does the Job. Filled it with concrete.

This is my wire holder. Handy when going to the club etc. There is no feeder hole as it is very hard to unwind.

I've seen your previous post with your holder before Neli - always wondered about the weight tho I guess you don't move it around too much.
A cd/dvd holder - would never have thought of that bonborn! I guess it would work better with smaller coils & adding feed holes wouldn't be a difficult process.
Ahhh, necessity, the mother of invention.
If I have time this week I think I'll have a go @ building mine which will be based on the old style wooden tool box with the wire around the 'carry handle' & the spools separated using some old vinyl floor tiles. Something like this:

Though I do like this one from
Popular Mechanics with the bottom draw. A 2nd handle, probably made of rope, will likely be added for ease of carrying.
Cheers

I am now off to toys r us or similar to buy a cheap toy tool box-even if it doesn't have holes I can drill them to the size I need-and probably for no more than $10

It stays outside in the garage where I wire. It is heavy and I dont need to move it. If it was not heavy it will move when I pull the wire.
Another option is a piece of round bar and short pieces of pipe/even hose pipe (1-2"long, put CD hose pipe , CD hose pipe ....Use the same CD holder ..cut a long slot on top and holes for the round bar bottom and lid and you pull the wire through the slot. Just imagining.

Some awesome ideas! Its something I've been dwelling on for a while, as I just knew there had to be something around that we could repurpose.
Thats a great idea neli! If the storage box doesn't work out, I might go down that track. Rather then filling with concrete, I might keep it empty so that it'd be easy to lug around to workshops and the like
My original idea was to buy a few handlines (fishing), and use them as the spools, and just put them on to a peice of dowel or something. Which was what lead me to the storage box
I'm just trying to figure a way to attach a spool to a drill bit now, so that I can use that to wind up my wire

Looking at the Popular mechanic version, I would install a second bar lower in the toolbox for the wire so their handle could remain as a handle. It would also reduce the angle that you are drawing the wire thru!
On te opposite side you could attach a tool roll so it would become a handy caddy...

Have you thought of going to your local electrical outlet or Sparky and seeing if they have empty spools left over? Hand reels are tapered which would reduce the volume of wire you could use... Just a thought.
