I have finally found another Bonsai nut who lives near me . He is selling off some of his collection to make room for his next projects. I scored this for only $50! Two things,
* what do people think?
* what do do now?

Looks like an excellent small broom style Chinese elm hidden under all that growth.

Get a pair of scissors and prune it way way back to leave just 1 or 2 buds of the new growth.

turn almost 180 deg for new front?

so we are starting to see a little bit more daylight in the evenings and mornings down here in the South West of WA. My question is should I be starting to do something with this just yet or wait a bit longer?

Watch the buds at the base of the leaves. When they start to swell, or have a bit of colour, go for it.

Even here where it is pretty cold some of my Chinese elms have started to show green in the buds so I am pruning and repotting right now. Exact timing does not matter - (any time of year for pruning) root prune anywhere within a month of new shoots is ok even after new shoots are growing has been ok in the limited number of trials I have done.

I just noticed that my chinese elms are starting to bud too and its gonna be -2 to -4 next 7 nights . They are always the first to move . This week = repotting

I repotted al mine last week and it warming up so time to do them now.
When you do this one Raymond, Trim off the crossing roots that can be seen.

I bought a Chinese Elm yesterday from Bunnings Armidale. In their nursery section. It was in full leaf. So I put in my hospital tank, as non of my bonsai deciduous are starting to bud burst yet. Interesting trunk on yours. But I would advise a good trim to shape.
I'm not expert but the one I bought for 16.99 came from Sydney. And has one leader branch, that is twice as long as the others. So snip go the shears, guys and gals. But they knocked back my offer of a mature elm, trained, advertised for $168 I offered them $100. I can't see any dormant buds on it, could be dead?

Chinese elms grow pretty quick, so seedlings and wild grown I.e out of the garden. $100.00 is a lot to pay for something that you think might be dead???

I am waiting patiently for my new KANESHIN tools to arrive before I get stuck into this. A couple of questions that I need to ask:
* Repot AND prune at the same time?
*Can I propagate from the cuttings?
Any style ideas would be handy,ie Broom obviously, but can anyone else see something I cant?
Have been waiting nearly 2 weeks for my tools. Ordered directly from KANESHIN website, very helpful at the other end... Just gotta wait...

Probably the worst part about ordering from them, the anticipation
Make sure you get yourself a cleaning block too (they call it kreanmate i think), and the tools will last a lifetime

Ordered that the next day and the man at Kaneshin said it would all be posted together

I just did two of my elms, both major root work and chopped the top. Took a stack of root cuttings and normal cuttings so fingers crossed.
