I was wondering if anyone has attempted to bonsai any of the native hibscus species (Alyogyne Huegelii / Hakeifolia)? If so did it work out ? I have one growing at home which has set seeds and was thinking of striking a few seedlings as pre bonsai stock Any info would be welcome

I have had a crack at H. diversivfolia, H. meraukensis and H. tiliaceus. All were easy to keep in containers but owing to their coarse growth were hard to style. The H. diversifolius and H. meraukensis are short-lived so ended up planted in the garden. Hibiscus tiliaceus is widely used in Asia with good results.

We have both those Alyogynes in the garden but I have not tried them as bonsai. Leaves are pretty big and I'm not sure they are really very long lived but they do grow quickly. Both grow very easily from cuttings so I have never considered growing seed. Murray Ralph - Australian plants from seed says easy to grow from seed without pre-treatment so should be worth a crack.
