Hello,
I can not use a wheel because of a bad back so I have to stick to handmade, so I mostly use Pat's (Mirkwood) wheel made pots.
Here are a couple of my hand made pots. Lynette

They are some great pots. I wonder if this is the first formal rectangle of yours I have seen. I might have to get you to make one of them for me.

do you make pots for people to buy? ?

I usually have pots for sale at a couple of places during the year. Usually at Nepean Club show and at Bonsai By the Harbour, however now I have moved, they will not be at the club show, but I will be bring some to Bonsai by the Harbour next year.
I haven't tried sending any by post etc, because I think the packing to ensure them arriving in one piece would make the pot to expensive.
I sold the rectangle pot about 2 years ago at a Nepean show for $30.00 and haaven't made another since. Looks like I will have to make some more.
I do not have specific sizes that I make thing because each piece is made by hand and is unique, it is why I like making freeform pots, they just flow into shape as the clay is worked. round approc 25cm [attachment=0]20071116_0822_1_2_1.JPG[/attachmen

I Think my computer connection was playing up and I couldn't seem to fix the last post, so I will try again. I went away and made some pots, so it may work now. Thanks for the nice comments even though the photos were written up wrong.

I will have to keep my eye open for your pots, I have some of Pat’s and some of Penny I do like the rectangle one a lot. It’s good to see pots made in Australia by Aussie potters.

Great pots. As a fellow potter (learning) I'd be interested to read about the materials and techniques used to make the above pots, especially the first two. What clays did you use? What texture is the finish on the rectangular pot? What did you glaze it with? Firing technique etc?
The second one (my favourite so far), did you carve in that split bark look or was that a side-product of the firing?

Sorry I haven't replied earlier, but I only been able look at this site now and then. I have been very busy lately. Floods and my kiln breading down.
The first pot was made by puting torn pieces into a mould the shape of the pot it was then washed with a mixture of black iron and copper oxide and then glazed with a matt opaque glaze.
The second was hand made by cutting out a circle for the base and making the side by drying the out one side of the clay with a heat gun and then rolling it out. It was then joined to the base.

Hi Lynette that sercond pot almost looks like it has been reinforced from the back after it was connected to the base? Great effect.
Did anyone you know take pictures of the demo you did for Bonsai by the harbour. Sounds like your too busy to upload at the moment any way.
Will you have any pots to sell during the Peter Adams Summit?

Ok, so press moulded. A trick of the trade for the professional potter, of course; for making multiples of the same shape and dimensions. I'm not yet at the stage of making plaster moulds. I also haven't worked with black iron, but have had a bit of a go with copper oxide. I've been using stains to varying success - some just burned out on one piece (not a bonsai pot), so very disappointed there.

That is so simple and makes perfect sense. Oh wait - at first, I thought you meant roll it out like a Swiss log, but most likely you meant on a slab roller. When I recently used ball clay on a pot, on the wheel, the cracks came out horizontal rather than vertical and I just couldn't think how to get them vertical. I must get Julian to let me use the blow torch when I'm next in (which will be a while away now); although he'll probably point me to a ball clay and then roll that. But I foresee that not working so well.
