Hi All,

I have a fairly large plum tree at my parents backyard that i am looking to make a few layers on.

i know its not the correct time to do this, but what would happen if i was to proceed to do this now?

will it still work? or best i leave it untill around November.

Im from Sydney area.

thanks.

Hi yamadorikid,
If you can leave it until October, that would be a good time.

Regards Ray

Winter layering will still work. It just takes longer to get roots so probably does not achieve much in the long run. You will probably remove the autumn layers around the same time you remove spring ones.

I note you are planning to do several layers on the tree. Why not experiment? Try some now and some in spring and report the results here.

Mid or early spring after the first flush of growth I reckon. But now would also work but more chance of it rotting as it won't do much until spring.

Thanks so much , I might give it a try this afternoon on a smaller layer, and wait till spring to do one lower down on a larger trunk ...

I have layered a cherry plum before and it seemed to push out new roots fairly quickly so hopefully this does the same, as they are somehow related I presume as their branch features seem similar when compared, but I'm no expert.

I'll post here to show how this winter layer goes....
Thanks
