Nurseries??

I know all year round is probably the answer but I remember someone on here talking about winter perhaps because new tress have been dug up?

If you are looking to purchase stock winter is good so you can see the form of deciduous trees without leaves.

Plus there are many trees that are best worked on when dormant so would be great to do some work on it and then spring is right around the corner!

Ray Nesci digs and pots up his ground grown stock thru winter and thus has the best range at the end of winter.

I have a series of trees that I will be digging as soon as winter kicks in. I do not sell many trees from the winter dig for at least 2-3 months as I want to be sure they are settled and starting to activate.
I have sold trees a month after digging and I find there can be issues with shock etc. Late late winter is about the best time to visit or a month into spring and then I am confident with the newly dug trees to sell.

I have the same policy as Mason at Bonsai By the Bay. While I know that 99% of my trees will survive in my care i have no control over what customers do with them when they leave here so I would rather be cautious and supply you with a tree I know can put up with a little less than optimum care so, Like mason, I usually only offer tree for sale when they are well recovered from transplant. That means the new catalogues are ready around October/ November.
A limited number of new trees are available as bare rooted, freshly dug stock to customers who can assure me they know enough to care for them properly and accept responsibility for survival, etc.

I would say for best range of stock visit nurseries in July, Aug and Sept but it will depend whether they grow their own trees or buy stock from growers. Get to know your suppliers. I'm sure they will be happy to tell you about their supply chain.
