Now that the leaves have fallen I can see just how many wayward shoots have grown over summer. Time to start winter pruning.

The trunk on this trident has little taper or movement and it just refuses to ramify but it has great nebari.

Also pruned a couple of Acer palmatums.

This one is still in a training pot. I posted some time ago when the top was removed from this tree. Still haven't decided which trunkline to use for this one. Suggestions still welcome.

Lots of strong shoots with long internodes that needed to be removed completely so it has probably not progressed much this year.

Maples do not seem to be grown as cascades or semicascade and I reckon it is good to try something different. Here is a trident that I'm trying to develop. This one is in a 15 cm growing pot.

Ideally I'd like to tilt this over a bit further but the strong roots at the back may prevent too much of a change.

Time will tell.

Hi Shibui, my trident maple is yet to loose it's leaves. Did you pluck yours or did they fall off.

Autumn comes a bit earlier here. The leaves have dropped naturally.

Hi Shibui , mate 35 klms down the road and mine are still growing . A few are changing but it will be a poor Autumn show again this year . The differences in the yard is evident so i may get to work a few sooner rather than later .
Thanks for sharing .
Cheers Alpine

Pruned a few more tridents today. Gradually working through the ones that have lost leaves. A few still have green leaves on.

And a couple of tiny ones. I did not really expect either of these to survive a full year but here they are, still alive though maybe not really healthy?

There is not much room for branches let alone ramification on trees this size

This time some Root over Rock tridents that I have picked out as having some sort of potential. I think the first 3 look good from either side.
Always happy to hear constructive opinions
#1 in a 20 cm pot. Sits nicely on the rock.
trident ROR 1 2014 5 1.JPG
trident ROR 1 2014 5 2.JPG
#2 also in a 20 cm pot. A bit of reverse taper in the trunk so i will have to try to get the lower part a bit thicker and hold back the upper parts.
Trident ROR 2 2014 5 1.JPG
Trident ROR 2 2014 5 2.JPG
#3 is a bit smaller - 15 cm pot. a mass of fused roots down the front of the rock.
trident ROR 3 2014 5 1.JPG
trident ROR 3 2014 5 2.JPG
This one was dubbed Root over Boulder when Jow was digging it from the growing beds a couple of years ago. I have posted pics of it before. I had left 2 trunk options on it initially but the upper one died back so it was carved out last winter. What is left is not too bad I think.

No sign of frost till late next week which will be officially winter.

Lol! No frost here, back up to 26 in the day time again. We did have a cool patch weeks ago so the crepe myrtles have started to drop, but everything else is still budding.

Some imaginative trunks there, particularly in the ROR lot. How will you get the low half of no.2 to thicken, while you hold back the top? Can you get low back-budding for sacrifice branches?
