Hey folks,

Picked this one up on Friday and did the initial styling today. Fair bit ended up coming off and its thin on back branches but it should fill out. I was much more ruthless with what to keep and cleaning out the branching after working with Grant yesterday and I feel like while the tree has been heavily reduced, I don't have any nagging questions regarding areas of the tree that might need work later.

Here's there tree before And once thinned and branches removed And wired the Nebari Current height is 34cm to the tip of the bud at the apex, and trunk is 5cm across

Now to wait and see what spring brings

Any thoughts or opinions would be great

Great work getting this one started on its way to bonsai, I too have a soft spot for cork bark trees. Best be ruthless now, rather than spending years wishing a part of the trunk/branch would get better.

How is the grafting on these, from what I can tell it has been done pretty well. Any obvious reverse taper?

The graft on these is indeed very good, so much so that I would say for a tree that is grafted with all things considered there is no reverse taper. The bark also will either accentuate of hide any reverse taper to an extent but I feel like on these trees it works to hide anything that may be there

Got this tree into a training pot today,

Looking back at the photo's it doesn't look like much has happened in a year haha, this tree was candle cut and didn't really push a full second flush this year, I noticed the same with my other nishiki so maybe it's a growth characteristic?

Mine has been late to push out the second flush and I have put it down to doing first flush prune to late in the season. I will try a little earlier next year.

question please.........does the tree produce more candles/foliage
if left to grow and do the needles get smaller as the you allow more candles/buds to develop?

Hi Jason,

Yes the tree will produce two flushes of growth each year, the first starts in late winter/spring and matures in late spring. It then will go into a brief dormant period followed but a second flush of growth from late summer through autumn.

If left to grow the needles will remain the same length as they are now, it will also produce many buds/branches in the one location. If pruned correctly then needle length can be reduced and the branching managed
