Hey folks,

Have been busy working on trees I already have over the last little while and not picked up anything new (that and I have been spending all my money on Erin pots) but seeing as it was my birthday this week and I had a gift card, I made the trip up to bonsai south today to have a look around, and pick up some wire and odds and ends.

I have been trying to stay away from pines lately as I have more than enough, and I wish to expand my collection of species, but Leong has this section of long, twisted pines that I have looked over a couple of times with interest and today one grabbed me.

Here's the tree Those pines you see with long graceful trunks, maybe a jin here or there and a tight mass of foliage up the top have been something I have found myself more and more attracted to so with that in mind I'm pretty happy with the way this one turned out, and it only took an hour or two as I saw this tree right from the start. Current height is 40cm

Have you considered losing or making a jin out of the first branch?

Hi mate,

Excellent first styling .

I love the first branch, without it the tree would look unbalanced (i.e in the pot as if it were about to topple over and squash some bonsai people). I think this tree will always need something significant on that side of the tree to balance it. Then again who knows what the future holds. For now it's perfect, well done!

I might have pulled it down at a much sharper angle though to really give it a more aged feel.

I would like to the some more dynamic movement in the first branch. The back section of it, bed down and to the right to bring it back in toward the trunk.
To me at the moment is just a straight branch sticking out

Hey folks

I got a bit excited (see my post in pots) and potted this tree today. Normally I would have thought this was a big no-no but this tree is in good health (or was before work) and after seeing Leong reduce/style 20+ yr old pines and repot them on the same day I figured this would be just fine.

Here it is in it's new home Hope you all enjoy the combo

If anybody has any thoughts on how much we can do here as opposed to say japan or europe in one year I would love to hear them

That is a stunning pot, I commented in your other post. Lovely colours it gives off to match the stock.

Hi Kerrin, I like the initial styling too, but that is a rather large reduction in both foliage and root mass in one hit, I hope your aftercare is excellent, I am sure that Leong's is first rate.

Thanks folks, it will reside on the deck in somewhat of a greenhouse situation for the next month or 2, will be watered when needed and given seasol weekly. Any other suggestions? The area it will be kept is north facing, protected from wind and has transparent laser light roofing so the tree doesn't need to be in direct sunlight.

Thought I would update this one,

Today I had the pleasure of doing my autumn needle plucking, a rewire and the second styling of this tree,

Yes, it survived, lost a few needles at one point and sulked for a while but it's pushed along and here it sits today Lets see what we all think

Looking really good Kerrin. I imagine a few years of refinement and needle reduction will see this as great tree that anyone would be proud to have on their bench. Especially when it gets there under their own hard work.

It looks very well balanced, comfortable a nice example.

Slowly slowly with this one it seems, I have to say though I think this is my favourite pot in my collection..... maybe

just an update with this one after almost another 2 years

Cleaned out the needles and completely re wired this tree today, finally starting to come together
