ausbonsai annual show

Uhm . . . . . each year in Cape Town my club has an annual show. Ours is at Easter-time. What I was wondering is why my online club, ausbonsai, does not have an annual show too??

Time to start an ausbonsai show? Once per year members post one well presented and taken photo of a single tree in their collection. No comments . . . . just an annual show of our trees here on this site.

I think it'd be rather cool.

Comments?

I like it. Great idea. Could even vote on favorites, or maybe even get somebody like Grant to do a critique of a few trees. Or maybe that would discourage people from contributing . . . Either way is fine with me, but it would be cool to get a bunch of people showing their trees.

Was thinking the regular competitions kind of achieve this, but not everyone enters

I'm pretty sure that Steven doesn't hold the reins here too tightly Andrew.
If you have a good idea, work out the categories and parameters (time frame, who is eligible, who judges, etc) and organise it then post it and see what happens.

I think it's a great idea.
Will be nice if all the photo's are displayed without a heap of idle chatter in between.

The show will take a lot less commitment than the competitions and will likely attract higher participation.

Most definitely. If anyone has an idea, then put some thought and note down your ideas come up with some guidelines and how it might work, then PM steven or the Mod team and we can see if it feasable

The only bad idea, is the one not proposed

PS I think it is a great idea :-), Will get us to extend our idea on displaying and upskilling ourselves with photograghy skills too :-)

I like the idea and support anyone with the time and patience to get it running.

Hi all,

My original concept was a non-competitive one. Each person wanting to take part simply goes to the trouble to take a good quality photo of a tree well displayed, and drops it into a common thread. That said, it could potentially be a compo with categories etc, but then there has to be rules and arguments about rules and deadlines and judging and prizes and sponsorships and logistics and and and etc etc. Food for thought.

Let's leave the idea to stew for a while and hear other comments.

Cheerio

Andrew

Hi Andrew I agree with a non competitive scenario-I think participation is likely to be higher. I would be happy to have any tree I entered critiqued for the purpose of tree development rather than a rating or score.

I had always assumed non-competitive...
Just a chance and friendly option to put forward some nice tree's.

I love the idea.

I think by nature, humans are mostly competitive. I mean, yes, there are those that do like to post and not for a competition. But essentially, you are either posting, because you are proud of what you have done, or are keen to hear comments of others. I am not really competitive by nature, but I would love to see a comp where you have 2 options. You can submit your entries, and they CAN be critiqued, and also enter into the comp. So you could post with the subject : "COMP COMMENTS", meaning you are happy to submit to both competition and have comments made, or just COMP, or just COMMENTS, ... self explanatory.

:tu:

I personally have not submitted trees to a competition, because I do not have stock good enough, but doing it for fun whereby you will receive comments would be great. I would suggest, limiting the number of entries to 3 subclasses as well. Seeing more trees from unique users is better than many trees from one user. That way it is more fun and interactive. And perhaps have a section that is for trees that clearly are not competition winners, but just 'special' trees, that have a long way to go, so new people don't feel unworthy of submitting.

Lets not forget that we already have forum categories for critiques/virts and progression series.

yes, but often it just goes off on tangents. I mean, you can have all pictures submitted in one reply post and then in that post, bulletpoint critiques can be made by the most experienced members. This way, each post is a new tree / user.
