Hi All,

Just a little confused...

Some say use it, some say its a waste of time and money.

Would like to know what everyones view is on this topic and the reason why.

Its a matter of opinion mate, some use it, some don't. Some say natural healing is better, whereas others will say cut paste is better. Here are a few links to the great debate:

Here is a previous discussion thread too:

There is some difference in species too. I'm not an expert but I remember hearing that azaleas shirked always be sealed, even for medium and small branches. Many species it really doesn't matter.

I use it ( the paste in a tube) on every cut I make of 5mm or bigger.
I have never lost a tree because of doing it, where damage / slow recovery might happen on those without.

Costs very little so i will keep on keeping it on :-)

Hi Eugene,
I'm with Ken on this one. I use the paste all the time. I also use both. Let me explain what I mean. I will apply the paste and let that dry for several days, then apply the putty on top. I use this method on larger cuts.

Karl is correct about Azaleas. When pruning an Azalea, seal the cut immediately after cutting. I would do this to any branch that is half a pencil thickness or larger. Don't wait until you have pruned the whole tree. With Azaleas, seal after each cut.

I have also found double sealing very good on deciduous trees.

It healed in one season the scars left after many seasons of untreated wounds on Tridents for instance.

I assume that means using paste and putty on each wound

Hi dansai and Ken,
That's correct. As mentioned above, I put the paste on and leave it until I'm sure it is totally dry. I then mould some putty over the top of the paste. My experience and others I have put onto this method, has bee the same as Grant. It certainly has helped with speeding up the healing.

Hi Peter,
Have a look at cut putty You will see the two types of putty. Further down in the thread you will see how I use the putty. You need to keep your fingers wet. I buy mine from Ray Nesci.
