So i have been allowed to take 3 from the 15 large buxus we purchased for hedging. Partner is anti bonsai and stingy. These were at one stage 4m in height. Roots have overgrown the pot (50cm pots).

Some amazing nebari and trunk is about the thickness of a coke can. Current height is 70cm.

So out of the pics i've posted below, please suggest the ones with the most potential please.

The fist one looks the goods, but hard to tell

See if any have an interesting trunkline apparent. They look pretty straight, but if there is a line thru the trunk and then into some branching that will give taper and movement.
1 looks like to have a smaller branch off the nebari? might this one be a nice twin trunk?

Hard to pick thru photos but any of them look OK to me :-)

Are they nursery stock? If so, great find.

If they were grown for bonsai and now have been converted to a hedge... not so good

I really like the roots on the 2nd pic

1st is also good

And maybe the last one to make 3.

My three :2c:

Yes.

If one were to favour Nebari (which I understand you should) then the first should be right up there as it has the most superior.

Cheers,

The first one is also my favourite. I will try and post a picture of the trunk line as well.

I ended up keeping 4 of these. As usual the one i was hoping would survive the most ( my fav) died :shake: :x .

These have been neglected for the last 2 growing seasons since being in my possession. Life got so busy that i nearly ended up selling these. Somehow these avoided the sale.

Any tips on root pruning to make them shallow?
