After visiting the Cherry Blossom Festival in the Auburn Botanical Gardens over the weekend, I'm now very determined find some material of the same species to create a bonsai.

After doing a bit of research, it appears I'm specifically after "prunus x blireana" (Flowering Plum) Cherry Blossom material.

Does anyone know a good place in Sydney (or within cooee) to pick up some a small to medium tree?

Leong at Bonsai South has a couple larger cherry blossom trees, but I'm not yet confident enough with beginner skills to fork out $450 for a tree just in case I kill it.
I checked Bunnings who had a straight thin tall tree, but I was looking for something more suitable for bonsai material.
Would it be worth grabbing a tree from Bunnings, chopping the top off and trying to re-style the straight trunk into something with some style?

I've heard these are difficult to propagate, so as a beginner I don't like my chances of success with cuttings.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I am doing some cuttings with a flowering plum species now. I think it's worth trying.

The prunus x blireana are common street trees where I live, there must be half a dozen on every street in my neighbourhood - they do look wonderful at this time of year! I'd also consider some of the other flowering prunus species. I think for smaller bonsai the large flowers of p x b species isn't as ideal as some of the other prunus which have smaller more delicate flowers.

Although I'm still really keen on the PxB, is there any particular alternatives species you would recommend?
And where would be the best place to get these?

Prunus Mume(flowering apricot) is a common one for bonsai, there are others, but I'm no expert sorry, some others may be able to suggest some. Definitely try PxB as a bonsai, I plan try some cuttings myself this year, but whilst your looking the other species may be worth trying too.

I guessing most of these would probably be suitable for bonsai, and the Prunus cerasifera 'Nigra' has really nice dark leaves.

...still I'm drawn to the PxB and determined to get one.
The more I look at these, the more I consider an expensive purchase.

He usually has lots of Prunus varieties he produces from Cutting and now being in flower shoud be able to find some nice ones

Just go back and take cuttings!!! Or find some street trees for cuttings. You could try the bunnings ones, be aware they are probably grafted, although you could layer them. Also with bunnings they are expensive now, but if you wait they normally go down to about $20.00

Ray nesci has heaps of different different flowering blossom trees at the moment was there on saturday. very reasonable also
