Hi All, I'm not very experienced in Bonsai. Have a couple air layered maples in training and a cedar. Nothing as big as this. This is a bougainvillea from my backyard. I prune it back and it puts out massive amounts of growth and the thorns get me each time. As I was pruning it back today, after the clippings filled a whole bin, I decided to remove it and plant something that is not as vigorous or thorny! The planter, put the whole pot in to the ground with a lot of pebbles at the base for drainage. It had grown massive roots about 5cm in diameter within the pot and on one side where there was a break a whole lot of roots went out. I've cut out most of the big roots and kept some feeders and potted it up as you see it. Question is, does the thorny variety of Bougainvillea suit for Bonsai? Can I have some input in to a styling approach for this tree. Thanks!

Thought I'd drop in to star some encouragement ad I think many would agree that that piece of Bougy you have their certainly excites and would make an exciting project as seasons pass on.
All you can really do now is let it pack on growth. You can read up individual for info on this specie for knowledge. Reassess the design once you have more options to play with. Great starter though. Mines in the ground and has hardly packed a punch

Do not worry about styling it yet, just let it recover strongly for the summer then you can decide later.
Thorns are not so bad as you can just cut them off.
