Hi there,

This is my first post and my experience with bonsai is limited, but my enthusiasm is high!
I have read a little about air layering and there is a good chance I will be in the possession of some Chinese Elms (full size - not bonsai) next week which I'm looking to cut down/bonsai. But without seeing them up close, I was pondering the idea of air layering the upper branches before I do that to maximise yield from the trees and make the most of the stock. Can I air layer a Chinese Elm in October (I'm in Melbourne) successfully and does anybody have any "must do" techniques/strategies to successfully air layering a Chinese Elm - I've never done it before but I'm excited! I understand they are pretty easy to work with so that is comforting.

Yes, you can do Chinese Elms now. One of the great things about layering is that you can choose some large branches, which could save many years of growing.

Hi Ryceman33,
Yes, when doing Air Layers you can choose whatever diameter branch you desire. If the layer is done correctly you will have roots on a Chinese Elm in two to three months. You will also produce a root system that is spread evenly around the tree.

This is a photo of the Variegated Chinese Elm I mentioned to you. It was layered on 19 October at the School Of Bonsai exhibition. The layer is looking quite healthy and there is new growth appearing.

And if you layer at a branch junction you can get a nice base flare. Plan your angle well as well as you can get good movement that way too.

The following couple of photos will show what Andrew is saying.
This one is a ground layer, but you still apply the same approach to an aerial layer. Note the angle of the top cut. The roots will grow out parrallel to the ground. After the layer is removed and planted the trunk will be at an angle to the ground level.
This one was layered at a point where there was flare on the trunk. As the roots thicken they will enhance the flare.
