This is the tree that started it all for me. The first i ever bought but never worked up until the Shohin comp here on Ausbonsai. Over the years it was just left to grow.
8 years later this is the result

Hugh, well done, really enjoy your progressions.
Considering your expertise I pause on offering advise but if I may, first let me say I do REALLY like what you have done with this as a total creation. Cautiously, the rot ball looks "clumpy", ? That is the tree is delicate the cliff is light and delicate with it's long slender striations, but the rootball and accompanying dirt is where my eye is attracted as it is a large dark mass that separates tree and cliff.
This, of course, may be a moot point seeing this creation in the real this "illusion" may not be there at all.
any way this is a beautiful work and inspiring to re-create,

I tend to agree Watty. I would liked to have seen the rootball reduced a bit first before going onto the rock. Great composition though Grant and with some reduction of the rootball will be a truly inspiring piece. Where did you get the rock from?

Re the root discussion, I like it as it is. To me just looks like the embankment has been washed away from the roots and left it hanging.

thanks for all the feedback. I plan on planting more moss, small plants on the rock at some point. for now i was just focusing on the design part of the tree in question. Ill update when there is new work.
Im pretty happy with the pot at this point, not too much of a fan of the white trays under rocks plantings, the pot matches with the colours and textures in the stone.

I love all the elements; the tree ,the Rock and the tray: but sorry I think they are not a good fit. The rock and tray look ok but the juni looks a bit too big Maybe alittle less foliage and try to hide the rootball around the back. Looks a bit off balance The design is great. This is my first impressions, sorry

The rock is very very top heavy so i had to attach it to the bottom of the pot. I used an aqua epoxy which attached it fast and very strongly. Its also brittle so if i ever need to take thr rock from the pot a chisel will do the job.

Yep, love it. Bold and adventurous Hugh. Will get better and better. Look forward to its refinement.

Would love an update on this one if you still have it Hugh. Did you end up making any changes?
