defoliation has achieved good reduction in leaf size but the job gets harder each year with twice as many leaves to remove

Nice tree! Tiger bark fig I think? Can't help but think that it would look more of a 'monster' in a pot that wasn't so wide. My eye tends to travel away from the tree's fantastic roots to the edge of the pot way over on the left.

Yes the correct size gets very difficult with large trees

Great tree-maybe even a rock in that empty space in the pot

A nice tree Gerard, a new acquisition? Lovely base. A good time to think about rounding of the canopy.

I got the tree in Jan 2013, defoliated in Jan 2013,2014 and 2015

Interesting to see the rock disappearing.
The canopy does need rounding, something I did not notice until I saw the photo. The branches will come down a little more and the first branch allowed to extend.
