This fig has been sitting on my bench for some time now. Was a bargain of eBay, only to find it had the big giant root protruding.
Anyway I look at it and never knew what to do, tried to sell it, neglected it. Then decided.

Before

Bit of a haircut, the big root has gone-surprisingly there was only a small bundle of fine roots at the end, bit of an angle change, and off to the growing area.there were some decent roots below the big bad one so I'm confident it'll survice (sorta)
I know my iPhone pictures suck, but it's late and the mozzies are so big I could hear them taunting me!

Ideal time of year to be doing this Angus. It should be covered in new shoots in a week or so. As for roots you can cut off nearly all roots and they will just grow new ones so I cannot see any problems.
You probably already know that these love fert. Put plenty on and then add some more and it will really grow.

Much improvement.
Now forget about it again for another year

Going by the "Fast Growth Method", you can hammer it 24/7/12 with heavy fertiliser... A. number of people have cut back roots and stems then fed them up big time! But I would suspect that starting off hard would cause additional shock for the plant so I'd be increasing it slowly...

I think I agree with EZ. With few roots and less leaves it can't really make use of much fertiliser so most will be leached through the mix and wasted. A small amount now so there's some available to new roots and leaves then build up as the leaves unfurl and grow.
