I have just noticed an old scar on my poinciana trunk has rotted away from the inside and left a large crater. I have removed the rotted wood but i am not sure if I should try to seal it or just let nature take its course. I really dont want to lose this one as it is my largest. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Do you keep it wet?

Paint it with "Earls wood hardener" and it should stop it rotting more and give time to roll over.

Ditto for what Ken said. If you do a large cut on these trees make sure the water can drain away and seal it. They seem to be a bit soft and susceptible to rot in the trunk.
