Hi all

I purchased this Japanese pot in 2011 at the Omiya Bonsai Village in Japan. It's a beautiful glazed pot and has beautiful bamboo markings all the way around the outer rim. My question is what species do you think would suit this pot and would your choice of species be influenced by the bamboo markings. I'm vet interested to hear your thoughts. Pot size is about 38cm x 27cm

Hi, great pot, wish I had it.

If it were mine I would be using it for multiple plantings, forest like natural setting, something thin slender and canopy of foliage.
Swampy's, Nandina's, Corky's, Chinese Elm. Some thing with exposed trunk I guess is what I am saying. Lots of moss.

But if you can't decide let me know and I can buy it from you

That's a very elegant pot indeed, and one that will take a lot of thought to match. Because it's square-cornered, you wouldn't possibly put anything too fluid or sinuous in it. Something a bit angular or formal maybe. Because it's quite shallow but wide it will balance better with a wide-ish canopy, for my money. The mottled glaze gives you a range of tones to match up with the leaf colour, but it can be tricky to match a green leaf to a green pot. Lovely glaze though.

Give yourself a few years, and see what turns up... It's well worth taking the time.
