Hi guys,

I was bored the other day, so i decided to place some of my smallest trees/settings on my driftwood stand. I designed this stand for small native trees, but as i do not have any quality natives, these will have to do. I made this stand last year for my major design project in design and technology.

The orchid hanging off the branch isn't always there, i stuck him there for the photo. Same with the orchid in the pot down the right hand corner. I never grow any trees here, just display them.

The "Jacaranda Island" is missing a palm (jacaranda. . . . confusing huh?) as one died. I have a replacement, just haven't had the time to stick him in. The leaves are that yucky yellow colour due to the time of the year. They are semi-deciduous.

Feel free to tell me what you think of these things, I'm pretty tough skinned

P.S. I am using a friends camera, which i OBVIOUSLY don't know how to use properly. Excuse the poor shots. I have attached a photo of the stand when i first put it in this position. This photo is still terrible, but much better than the rest.

How did it score in the design course?

And the Bonsai collection is growing. With all this experimenting you undertake its good to see some real Bonsai.

Hi Gary!

Glad you liked it more than the evil markers Unfortunately, i didnt get a mark for this piece, only a joint mark for this, the portfolio and my exam marks rolled into one. I passed easily, but didnt top the class.

Some real bonsai?!?!?!?!?! Where?!?!?!?!?!? I would like some for a change

Hey Jay C the first shot looks like it is holding up the universe. Very nice it is different. Is that what they mean when they say to think out side the square?

Seeing as most Shohin are shown on stands that are like square , not all I have a round one.

Hi all!

Thank you all very much for your comments Chris, from the ground to the top of the top pad measures 99cm's. It displays the trees best when sat on a low bench, like those at many displays. I dont know about you people, but i often find myself kneeling at displays to look at the trees from eye level. Is that normal? Or are the displays set up with tables that are too short? Either way, this stand was designed so that it brought the bonsai much closer to the natural viewing range.

The stand is looking good with displayed material really helping. Nine months makes a lot of difference.

Regarding the recent soil discussion JayC and the sample you gave me, —I'm all but converted, just waiting for availability. In the meantime I'm trying all the products, such as aquarium potting mixes and cat litter!

I cant remember my marks now They weren't too bad, because Mum didn't ban me from spending time at bonsai nurseries (thats the punishment).

Remember that look you gave me when i showed you the mix? You thought i completely lost it! I'm glad you like inorganics now, there's just so many advantages. And the ingredients are becoming easier to obtain. Keep trying AnneK, and if you find anything good, please tell us all:)

On that Note I asked Clinton again last night if he has ordered the Diatomite yet. He said not yet, but that he should have it by next week

I have been waiting for this one to flower so I could show you. I am unsure what type it is maybe a native?. I have had it inside for winter in a sunny position as an experiment and it was doing pretty good but I got a bit slack with the watering towards the end. I moved it out under cover of the veandah where it could be waterd easier and the cold gave it a hard time so I brought it back in for now. So it looks a little sad but it seems to be growing new roots and has alot of flower spikes on the way I think. I had others that where left outside all winter and they did ok so maybe it is just a climatization thing?
I will have to post them in a new thread for you to give me advice. I think one is due for a repot but think that should have been done after flowering last year?

Thanks for showing that orchid. Yes, it is a native, it used to be called "Dendrobium kingianum", but has recently been renamed as "Thelychiton kingianus". It can take quiet bright light, but not full sun, all day. DOnt water it too much through autumn/winter, or you wont get many flowers. Repot after flowering.
