spotted these two ash trees along the avoca river & thought they were worth bringing home. they are shooting already & should shape up to be ok. any ideas, not sure whether to use the old stumps as carving material or remove them & have a cleaner looking trunk line. what thoughts do we have. dave.

hey miyagi,

i personal like the shape of the bottom trunk, think this has potential for an informal upright, the first one i would try for a "domed" appearance. i dont know to much about desert ash tho.
great find.
enjoy

thanks jamie. here is another ash that i collected 12 months ago. check out the base on this one. have been trying to fatten up the leader before shaping & wiring. will post more photos of this as shaping happens. dave.

very nice dave ! that 2nd one is a rippa. the 3rd ive seen and yes what a monster base! even if you go for clean trunk lines i would hollow such large cuts. carving and hollowing on deciduous trees that are macho and musclular works. especially when the cambium heals and rolls. ;) :D
