Inspired by nature is why i style trees .Bonsai i think but without the rules .This pic was snapped on a dash to Melbounre last week .I think i would call this "Aussie Style Raft" a work of Nature ,the ultimate Yamadori , alas its a bit to big for these old bones to collect .Could you imagine this beauty in your back yard .If your ever heading down the Hume Highway around Benalla its in a paddock on the South bound lane truck stop 5klms South of Benalla .Cheers

Now that is something you don't see everyday! Interesting length it has to it , what do you think caused such a long growth?

gums are prone to falling over, sometimes the conditions are right that the tree will strike roots all the way allong the trunk and the branches that are facing upwards will become the new trunks making it a raft style tree.

there is one of these just down the road from me, a bit smaller in scale but impressive none the less, i have been meaning to get a pic for a long time and a gum to try and recreate the image

Hi Mate this is very unusual as it has been a tripple trunk tree . If 1 trunk has fallen then it would have ,i would think branches on the outer of the tree , underside of the raft ? these could have been there then rotted off .It is around 15-20 meters in length from memory and still running along the ground .The slight hump in the trunk is where a seedling has sprouted with 2 trunks , 1 each side of the raft lifting it and fusing at the same time .Being behind a chain wire fence it and a little distant its hard to investigate completely .Cheers

I have a Eucalypt I got earlier this year that I am doing something similar with actually.

Unlike this one, mine will not be a Raft, as the top of the trunk section will not be on the ground but elevated slightly to give that Fallen over look

Was planning on planting on a Sandstone slab maybe

Hi Ken always liked the gums , as a kid i played on one that had fallen over a dam bank and was a raft elevated .I think that was the start of my interest i small landscape plants long before i heard the word Bonsai or Penjing .Cheers

I have to say raft is probably one of my most favourite bonsai styles, and this tree is the most inspirational one I've seen yet in the wild. There's a really good one out near Mooranbah QLD near a creak that I went to with my dad that is a euc aswell but has a hollow right down the emirs trunk with a large trunk coming out ot the end of the raft, it's quite a beautiful raft of nature if you ever get to see it (I dought it though, it's the middle of know where basically )
