Fig dieback

Any clues on what caused this dieback on my fig?
All the fine growth died. The tree has shot back on a mix of newer and older wood. I checked the roots and they looked fine. There is a bit of insect damage, but nothing out of the ordinary. Perhaps there is some fungal infection.
I have sprayed the tree with confidor and anti-fungal, so these causes should now be treated.
The tree is recovering, but not jumping out of its skin, as it should at this time of year.
