I know that White Pines are hard to grow in the Australian climate compared to JBP which is easier in terms of climate, unless you live somewhere like the Blue Mountains or colder parts of Australia.
But I would like to know are there any benefits from grafted White Pines. IE: Japanese White Pine Hatsukasa, hagoromo etc...
Can these pine survive alot better than normal white pine since they are dwarf/grafted cultivars? What I mean, can they survive in full sun or part sun/shade?

I have a JWP Hatsukasa from Ray Nesci and have it placed in sun next to carport where my other bonsai are placed. Would it be ideal to place the JWP Hatsukasa in a shady area instead?

Anyone have any experience growing a Scots Pine in Sydney from a starter stock?

I know Cambewarra bonsai (2.5 hrs south Sydney) that used to be open was growing scotts pines for years without issue. They also had quite a old Grafted JWP all out in full sun. I think they tried mugos at one point but they always went backwards after a few years and i proberly put it down to not a cold enough winter. I have one in NE vic and eventhough my summers are way more extreme then Sydney my winters are -5+ . i have a white pine growing in the garden for 5 years now also no problems .
Proberly try partial shade for a summer and see how they respond . If you getting overly long growth and leggy growth it maybe a indication of more sun needed.

Because they have a stronger more efficient root system (from black pine usually) they can take up water and nutrients at an increased rate, therefore they will be ''somewhat'' more able to deal with light, heat and lack of humidity. However not much more than one on its own roots. The problem is though, that the graft union will get uglier as the years pass. Some people can see past that but I can't.

If I read it right, so you are saying that Nursery use a well developed JBP stock and graft on dwarf JWP species onto them?
But, JWP grafted on still require the same weather conditions as normal JWP or it adapts to JBP conditions?

Are you growing in a pot or ground?

It is a bit cooler down here than Sydney but Scots pine grows very well here. I found it to be as tough and fast growing as Black pines.
I have only tried a few white pines but so far, all went slowly backwards until they died. I have a few seedlings at the moment and

Just want to make sure since I'm experimenting 1 Scots Pine in full sun and 1 in partial shade.
JWP Hatsukasa is in full sun/part shade
