Autumn color has been a bit slow in my back yard, but my hawthorn has come to the party.



Here is a lone trident whip that is taking the lead.

The rain and wind over the last couple of days has knocked a fair few leaves off this English elm but you get the idea

This one is not yet bonsai but does have some potential. It is A. palmatum 'Hanama Nishiki' which is a dwarf Japanese maple. May be a bit temperamental, even when grafted, but with small leaves, compact growth and great autumn colour it is worth persisting with.

Bought an olive recently and this was growing in the pot. Only a tiny seedling but ohh so red.

getting quite a nice dab of colour in Sydney this year, so took some pics around the garden and benches yesterday

The differences in a particular trees can be amazing, and is highlighted by some trees in Baulkham hills near my daughters school.
There are many Liquidamber used as garden and street trees, and this particular group caught my attention a few weeks ago. This morning had a chance to go by and take my camera along too.
There are 4 trees that will have been planted at the same time about 30 years ago, and are all on the same section of footpath so are as close to the same environment as one can get.

1 tree is almost bare, 2 with many leaves still on, and the other is still bright green with only some leaves starting to colour up!

I liken them to a set of traffic lights, with red green and yellow patches

Nature really is awesome !

There are always differences between individual trees within a species but I think it is possible that these may well be different species of Liquidamber. There are 4 species in the family and at least a couple of them are grown in Australia.
note the green leaf has more points at the base of the leaf and a couple of extra points along the sides of the main lobes indicating it could be L. orientalis. The other plainer leaves are probably L. styraciflua.

Im in the eastern suburbs, close to Sydney Airport. a friend of mine suggested its probably because my trees are a little bit more protected compared to street trees and most of everyone's tree on here.

If you go for a drive along Wisemans Ferry Road, you will go along a straight bit (Click here for Google Street View). The smaller trees on the Northern Side are all red and the larger trees on the Southern side are all still green.

Both sides are maples.
