Tonight at the BSV monthly meeting Joe will make a presentation on "bonsai display"
Several club members will each set up a 3 point display and Joe will lead discussion on the finer points of bonsai display.
There are sure to be lots of nice trees to see tonight.

Very keen for a report.

I enjoyed the evening very much, there was lots of interest and strong attendance. Those who put up displays put in lots of thought and made an effort to provide variety. Joe was great in his awareness of what was intended and suggestions for improvement, subtle changes make a huge difference. Those who attended will have a new appreciation for future displays.
In summary
A three point display done well will far outweigh the individual pieces.

I enjoyed it too Gerard - now I just need to find a bunch more display stands

...or maybe a cinder block and a tea towel?

Good job all round. It is amazing how professional trees can look when set up and displayed nicely.

That Sticky Wattle has one of the more developed trunks that I have seen on that species.

The JBP is fantastic - obviously in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing.

Nice display and interested to hear a summary of Joes comments for thos too far away to be there in person.

they are all 3 point displays but is there ny reason why none with a scroll?
All are main tree, with other elements being a Mini / Shohin and a Soe or Suiseki?

It was nice to see a few themes,
(Australian), a sticky wattle with kangaroos as an accent.
(Harsh environment), a weathered juniper and coarse barked pear with a mountain stone accent.
(Seaside), a coastal tea tree with a seashell accent.
I am quite sure that all the participants will do better next time. Some points which will be better considered in future.
Direction of movement should draw the viewer to the centre. In order to engage the viewer we want to avoid attention drifting off to one side. Many of these compositions would benefit from a taller simple stand for the second tree.
It is important to mix things up to avoid monotony,
1) tree canopy shape
2) texture of foliage (leaves or needles) (spiky or soft) (coarse or delicate)
3) colour of foliage
4) pot (glazed or unglazed) (round or square) (textured?) (colour?)
Of course we are limited in what is available to us with stands, pots, trees and accents but understanding what works will make our displays better.

Nobody knew what others were presenting, the venue made the scroll option difficult because the scroll would need to be fixed to the brick wall with blu tac. This would not allow the plain white backdrop which was used for photos. I think we all chose other options for this reason.

Very interesting, a very demanding form of display. The pine display particularly impressed me. Not only does each tree or accent need to be refined and complete in itself, but the balance between them all needs to be perfect. The most successful seem to be those where there is quite a difference in size between the main tree and the subsidiary, and where accent is very simple indeed.

More information on bonsai display, setting up a tokonama will be presented to Frday program registrants with Koji Hiramatsu at The Adelaide AABC Convention in May.

I'd have loved to have been at BSV for Joe's presentation, instead will be drawing upon collective experiences and Koji for guidelines with three point display, direction of display, grouping bonsai, use of accent plants/objects/scrolls, tokonama design principles, exhibition flow.

Less than two months until 'Bonsai - A Growing Art' ... look forward to catching up with others in Adelaide!!!

We learnt lots from Joe on Monday but there is so much involved that it feels like the first day of school.
I am really looking forward to the next lesson with Koji.
