CARVED OUT A ROCK TODAY.

I have had this piece of hard sandstone sitting around for about 7 years, and today I thought I could use it for one of my trees, but it needed to have a hollow in it. So I set to work with the angle grinder and a stone cutting blade and got to it.
This is the result, just thought I would post it up to show everyone, I thought it came up a treat.

You will get an idea of the size of the stone by comparing it with the surrounding milk crates.
I plan on putting a slanting style jade into it. will post photos after the repot.

Nice rock! Was it carved or is it natural?

GERARD - we both know.
JOSH - yes it is heavy, a 2 man lift, but worth it I think.
JARAD - this is a natural coastal sandstone, I only put the hollow in it, nothing else.
ANDREW F - sorry, no ishi-tsuki for this one, see following photos. I have other stones for future ishi-tsuki.
I potted this jade in the hollow today, and will dress the soil around the base tomorrow.

Oh my goodness

that rock is huge. For a two man lift I'd want something better than a jade in it lol. Very nice combo though, well done.

Hi Josh, the reason for the jade combo is; when we scattered mum's ashes into the ocean, I brought the rock home with the idea of creating something in her memory. Mum loved the ocean and her Jade plant, hence this creation.
The plant only had its first styling in October 2014, so has a long way to go in future development, it also needs some adjustments now that it has been "potted", should be looking pretty nice after another summer season's growing. I will have it in a glasshouse over the cooler months so that it will continue to power on. Miyagiman.

WoW that is one seriously stunning looking rock. What a fantastic idea to combine the two in Moms memory. Good onya. That will forever have a special significance to you.
I have had the same idea for a while now. Got a pumice block of the same size. Got three portulacarias of different sizes that's going in there......

Hi. Looking nice. Just some questions . How did you get the hole so round and neat? The surface of the hole also seem quite straight and smooth. How did you get it like that ? Thanks . Tim

Hi Tim, using the 100 mm angle grinder with the stone grinding wheel vertically instead of down flat.
I worked the angle grinder in an arc sideways covering about a 75mm arc with a depth that felt comfortable to grind the stone whilst moving sideways, the depth varied due to differences in hardness at different depths, usually trying to get a depth of about 5 - 10 mm. I just stuck at it working my way around in a circle and getting deeper each time. hand control of the angle grinder is critical, otherwise it tries to move all over the place.
Hope that helps explain the process.
Thanks to all with the positive comments as jade tends to be frowned upon as bonsai in our neck of the woods.
