Oh ok. I'm probably going to be shot for saying this, but I have seen some 1/2 to 1kg bags of "bonsai" ( ;) ) pebbles/gravel/dressing stones in the garden area as well as the fertilizer/propagation section. I will duck into the big green shed on my way home from work to make sure I'm not giving you a bum steer.

What size quantities were you looking for?

Mate if you cant find gravel, try asking around for Blue Metal. - Japanese Bonsai Master approved soil component!

Any landscaping place or garden center that sells mulches and all that should have it.

Cheers,
Mo

Yeah, bum steer. All I could find was the bonsai environment stuff in a 15kg bag.

Does blue metal come in various sizes?

Its oten found in landscape yards as crushed dust or 'quarter minus' as in 1/4 inch (6mm) and less. My local yard then has 7mm gravel used for backfilling around pipes, 20mm for drainage, then 50mm ballast. All of these are from a local granite quarry. Most yards will have a variety of sizes of gravel but what stone it is will depend on where they source it from. One thing with blue metal is that it actually releases nutrients more so than granite.

I bought my blue metal 5-7ml from BC sands near the airport. They had finer 0-5ml from memory but you'd have to sieve that and I can't be bothered. Otherwise try river sand from bunnings and sieve out the fines. But if you can deal with the ugly look of blue metal go with that. I've been using a blue metal/diatomite/coco peat mix for a few years now.

Masters have 5kg bags of "coarse grit" which I mix 50/50 through my mix. Works well.

Depends where you go and where they get it from, I've had it in 2-6 or 2-5mm from memory.

I happen to live in the Northern Suburbs; however the city of Canberra.

I stock 20kg bags of 3mm pebbles in Gold, Midnight(dark) and Red.

I am considering stocking 6mm as well.

Pics of both below.

There will be bags of pebble for sale this weekend at the Weston Creek Bonsai show; or PM me.

Hi Grant,

They are for decoration on the surface rather than a potting media component.
