Hi all,
Not really sure what forum this should be in but I have just been wondering if anyone here knows much about cytokinin replacement?
As cytokinins are produced (mostly) in the roots and move to the shoots (as necessary), when we do a root prune on a bonsai we are effectively removing alot of the cytokinins and their production points....is there a (liquid or otherwise) supplement to replace the hormones lost during a root prune?
I know that there is alot of IAA (auxin) available commercially but don't know if there is much to do with cytokinins (adenine, kinetin, zeatin etc) available to us..
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You might find answers at CSIRO plant division. They may have papers on the subject.

While I haven't found anything related to cytokinin production at the CSIRO yet, I did find something which I'm not sure if anyone here uses that much but I reckon it will be very useful for my needs, a seed germination standard search!
You can choose genus and/or species and search for the germ. standards the clever buggers at CSIRO have deduced is best for each species. I know alot of people have their own methods set in stone but it's always good to have some reassurance!
But, the question still stands....have said clever buggers made a cytokinin powder/liquid that we can add to our depleted plants?

I would doubt it.
Unless its used scientifically, it wont have a commercial use.

Bugger, I would love to get some to do some tests with. I guess because it's not recognised as something which will effect the production of fruit or flowers then the commercial side would be lacking. Maybe we will have to spark some interest in the viticulture industry to get some action.

Bonsai is about as close as science and art get together, settle down fractal fans.

It may not be used commercially due to the difficultly in producing it, I'm not sure.

There is an ancient compound that gardeners have used since the 19th century that is a source of added Cytokinins. It was used way back when to grow superior potatoes. It has been available in Australia as a concentrate since the early 70's.
It can be sourced from many nurseries hardware stores and even supermarkets.
A great Aussie company called seasol! You can even buy it mixed with fish emulsion now!
