G'day all,
Seen this tree/bush that looks like a Juniper but I wouldn't know it from a Bar of soap!
Foliage is flat (almost 2D) so while it looks like a Juni, it may very well be something else; please help:

Of corse, once identified, is it worthwhile trying it as bonsai? I have not seen anyone use this this one...
Cheers

Leland cypress (x Cupressocyparis leylandii) is a rare, but successful, hybrid between two different genera: Cupressus and Chamaecyparis. Leyland cypress has a short lifespan for an evergreen tree, surviving for 10 to 20 years. This tall evergreen conifer is grown commercially in the Southeast as a Christmas tree.

I believe that most of the flat foliage conifers are from Chamaecyparis genus. C. obtusa and C. pisifera are names I recognise but others are also in cultivation. Maybe one of those?
C. obtusa is known as Hinoki cypress and are used for bonsai in Japan and elsewhere so should be ok. The problem is the large, flat foliage planes.

Thank you Neil,
My frustration is that looking these up on a general internally search brings up images that are exactly what I'm looking for and loads of others that are nothing like what I'm looking for!!
So what's correct and what's bogus??
Cheers

Hey mate,
Hinokis have curling foliage so I don't think thats what it is.
Best option with these is to take a pic of the whole tree to observe the growth habit, which offers a clue as to what it is also.
Cheers,
