Hey folks,

I had the pleasure of spending the day at Bonsai south with Mauro yesterday working on a challenging and beautiful mugo pine

Here's the before shot I had left the tree at the nursery after purchase so I needed to clean it out (which took about 2 hours haha) and once we discussed the options, we agreed that there was 2 trees here, both an informal upright and a nice cascade, but we both also agreed that with a bit of work, we could combine the 2 to get one great tree.

The issue was the large first left branch (wrist thickness)

Enter 3 pieces of flattend 4.5mm wire, raffia, electrical tape, 2 pieces of 6mm wire, one guy wire and a solid steel bar. We managed to get the branch to come around about 90 degrees and then set about setting the main structure.

After this it was up to me to finish the fine wiring and setting the pads (took me another 4 hours last night) and here it is, the finished tree Left view Back Right view All in all I'm over the moon,

Nice job. I have a dwarf Scotts pine which is really going to stretch him. (unless he takes the easy way out)

He will be in Perth in July the Bonsai Society of WA are hosting workshops with him at Glouster Park on the 12th July, Ring Nigel.

Beautiful tree, Kerrin. It certainly provides a lot of options! Will be interesting to see how a Mugo does long-term in Wollongong. I like the look of them (and scots), but had always laboured under the (mis?)apprehension that they needed a truly COLD winter to really rest up.

Nice start.

He seems to be working on a few Mugos on his tour.

I didn't get to see the finished tree after i helped you with the bending at the workshop.
Very happy to see the end result, what a great starting point for the tree!

Thanks for the kind words folks, and a big thank you Sean for your help yesterday, I wasn't meant to finish it but couldn't help myself all the illawarra members that helped out yesterday were fantastic

Bit of an update on this one,

it seems the heavy bend caused a bit more damage than was initially thought, that or too much moisture got in under the layer of electrical tape as the branch under the tape was very wet, either way the whole branch died off.....

Needless to say this was a bit of a blow, but you can only play the hand you are dealt so a restyle was in order.

The rammification needs to be built as it's a bit thin but here it is now

Hi Kerrin just another option as you did ask for a thought,the branch that you have coming down its back is drawing and exaggerating the straightness of the trunk even knowing that there is a kink there I think,what am looking at is a slight bias the other way and and more exaggeration if you like,just another idea mate hope you don't mind... cheers Anthony
