On the weekend I was down at my parents farm near Braidwood, NSW. There are a number of really large, old pine trees and a bunch of newer trees that have grown from these. I airlayered a branch on one of the old trees. I also collected a small tree and have just planted in into its new home. Let's hope it survives.

If this were my tree mate, I'd be looking to build myself a tree out of just one of the lowest branches. I.e. Bend to get that lowest whorl as low as possible, grow out a new leader using one of the branches at that whorl (cutting the rest of the branches off) and leaving the rest of the trunk and the whorls higher up as sacrifice to thicken the trunk rapidly.

In time, you'll end up with a nicely twisted base, good taper, good branching and an overall very nice tree.
