Hi everyone,

As we all know Mauro has just about completed his 2015 tour of Australia.

I would love to see everyone's before and after shots of those whom attended his workshops. I have seen a few pop up on fb, and a few hear and there on Ausbonsai but thought it would be nice to see them all in the one spot.

We were lucky enough to have an Impromptu styling sesh with Mauro while he was a guest at Ric's. He taught my Gf the basic tenets of design and how to wire a swampy we got from Tien at the Ausbons market day.

Great teacher, massive personality 10/10 would spectate again.

Look forward to filling all the neg spaces with secondaries and work at building up the ramification.

I must say.... Im very jealous of Mauros life!

I took along this grafted Japanese black pine, 'yatsabusa'. It had some serious problems to overcome! The graft was ugly with some severe reverse taper which extended about 8cm straight down below the surface of the soil before the actual roots. It was my opinion that this tree would never look good in a shallow pot and the best option would be a cascade or semi-cascade which could be displayed in a deep pot which and hide the faults.
There was much discussion on how to produce more roots. In Australia pinus thunbergii, 'yatsabusa' seems to be almost always grafted which suggests that new root development is likely to be weak. Mauro's solution was to design a raft and produce new roots along the underside of the trunk. Mauro believed this would be easy with the method of using bark removal and hormone paste. I am less convinced that this would produce roots easily and rather than wait and see, I plan to graft 10 or 12 JBP seedlings to produce a new strong root system.

Been meaning to ask you how this turned out. It will end up as a unique specimen if all goes to plan!

With some "Treeman" assistance I have grafted some regular black pine seedlings to the raft in order to produce new roots, these will be allowed to grow freely for a couple of years and will be cut off once the roots are established. Soil has been added to the tray and after 3 weeks the seedlings have candles 1.5cm long.
