Prunus mume (Japanese flowering apricot) has been quite slow to develop but I am gradually building a few branches.

Good old "slow to develop" Prunus mume  Up there with "Malus purpurea" I hope you live long enough to develop it Gerard as it has a wonderful trunk.

Actually not, straight out of the "Kokofu" entry's book. I have it at home. I remembered looking at it a while ago and when i looked it up i was surprised at how similar it was to Gerards tree. A future glimpse possibly.

the best thing to do with Mume is put them in a large growth pot or in the ground for a season. they will kick off and grow quick quick, developing thick branches. you can cut these back to a few buds in early summer and by autumn they will put out a small bit of lateral growth before going formant. They wont flower much the next season as you have stimulates leaf buds. Next season you will tripple your branches
