Today I was out and found a couple of rather neglected 'Nursery' Figs that may come up to scratch over time.
A fig stump with a fair amount of old decaying wood but plenty of growth to give it a new lease of life over the next year.

I slipped #(1) straight out of it black pot into a rather interesting 'round pot' without any more than a back fill of soil and a water.
I waited a while and looked it over and thought........ Get into the soft wood removal straight away and see if any lines are forth coming to which I will let you all judge.

#(2) was bought as a novelty and although it will grow out OK ain't a 'Bonsai'....It's someones toy that may or may not stay as it is...."maybe the grower has identified their handy work in its rather unusual form.
I will see if it is worth it by your critique and laughter.

Regards Steve. Camera date is incorrect....this is todays offering 28/07/2015

You have a Doughnut Bondai ...

I am intrigued by your pot (last picture)!

RE:#1
I have seen a picture of a fat stump without taper. The grower had lots of new growth coming from the 'crown' and turned it into a semi Brooke style. The core of this stump was later bored-out... Looked fantastic and that's what yours reminds me of.

Keep going should be a great opportunity.

Cheers

The pot is 'etched unglazed red clay' and as far as I know from Spain and was amongst other donated pots and vases that all had Spanish origin from the OP shop for $3.99.
I have started digging out the soft center of #1 and would of finished it only I had a branch 'guyed' down and the rotary cutter 'pinged' the guy and 'boom'.
Ripped of a branch, blew up the tool (the tool holding the tool blew up as well )
Waiting on a 'new' rotary the back into it.

Will post up a few pics later.

Regards
Steve

This fig kept me interested for a little while but I decided to chop it after a week and re pot.
It was too cold outside anyway so for the last five months it has lived a warm existence inside with no sign of life other than 'green under the bark when I regularly pricked it for signs of life.
Now after considerable dormancy both trunks are beginning to bud.
Still not 100% sure but I think it's a Bangi.

The other Fig in initial post 'rotted off in the pot I chose and is now a back stump for a few Chinese Maple seedlings.. Win some Loose sum.

Progression from the ugly plaited ring to what seems to be a future BONSAI

If anyone remembers the original purchase was a plaited ring that was a bit of a joke although I persisted a while and it just died.. Or so I thought.
I cut out the plait and left it alone..a few shoots emerged from supposed 'dead' wood so I lifted it and trimmed back some rot, sealed the scaring and re potted.
Placed it near the window and waited.
The result is above.Since November 2015 it lives permanently as an indoor and is thriving.
Fickle weather is not to it's liking but with conditions within our living room what they are to keeps us happy this Fiscus does well as does it's companion pot belly next to it.

So I'm guessing this is a lesson - don't carve figs cos they'll rot?

At least the plaited one is still going!

The big stump rapidly rotted after using it as a sort of 'phoenix' and has gone via the garden waste bin.The Maples are now doing well attached to a 'black wood' stump I found lying next to the rail line at Morwell while I was sitting on a freight train waiting for another train to pass me.. 'always scanning for something to scrounge'. :?:
It had rot from purchase that was deep and was beyond deaths door from the start.
